When we clear a property, watches are one of the items families ask about most. A quick, honest guide to what affects value:

• Brand and model — recognised Swiss and German manufacturers generally hold value better than fashion or quartz brands.
• Condition — working movement, an original dial, and minimal case wear all matter.
• Papers and box — original documentation and packaging can meaningfully increase value, but plenty of watches without them are still worth assessing.
• Servicing history — a recently serviced mechanical watch is easier to value accurately.
